In early 2007 we reported that numerous busts from several of Paris' largest cemeteries had gone missing since the fall of 2006 (and possibly even earlier). While thefts have been a problem in the cemeterie sin the past, there had been in fact a series of many busts and medallions turning up missing in a relatively short period of time.

Well it appears that the thieves were caught this past spring -- a mother and two sons I believe. They were fairly inept at trying to fence their stolen items and many of the busts have now been recovered.

The conservation in Pere Lachaise is also concerned that some of the busts are unstable on their pedestals and have taken steps to remove these until they can be affixed more peermanently. You can find out more about this at my blog (click here for additional information).

And speaking of Pere Lachaise be forewarned that the bathrooms are only marginally functional. While I cannot speak to the situation in the women's bathroom (after all) I can tell you that the men's bathrooms have not had paper in them for months now and fairly reek of stench. You need to know before you go. . .

You can always check my blog for new photos and the latest information as well.

On a more positive note, one of the biggest stories is the release of Heddy Honigmann's documentary on Pere Lachaise. Click here to view the trailer.
